Don’t get left in the cold

Winter is well under way and staying warm can be tricky, especially if finances are stretched.

There's schemes that can help reduce these bills and in some cases, offer help to paying for them.

Herefordshire has a dedicated team  to help people understand all of the below and apply for certain schemes that they might be eligible for; The Keep Herefordshire Warm team.

Contact them for free, on 0800 677 1432.

Warm Homes Discount

You could be eligible for the Warm Homes Discount if you’re on a low income. This discount is offered by the major energy suppliers and could mean a potential saving of up to £140 (subject to supplier criteria being met).

The Warm Homes Discount is separate from, and will not affect, any Cold Weather Payments or Winter Fuel Payments you may already receive.

Further information can be found on www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme/eligibility

Welsh Water HelpU

If your household’s income is less than £15,000 per year, you might be eligible to receive support from Welsh Water’s HelpU tariff to reduce the amount you pay. This could reduce your annual water charge to £190 per year.

Further information can be found on www.dwrcymru.com/en/My-Account/Helpu.aspx

Winter Fuel Payment This is a tax-free benefit to help pay for heating during winter. You could be eligible if you have reached the qualifying age and you normally live in Great Britain. For winter 2017/18 people born on or before 5 August 1953 will have reached the qualifying age www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment

Cold Weather Payment

This may be available if you're receiving certain benefits. Payments are made when your local temperature is either recorded as, or forecast to be, an average of zero degrees Celsius or below, over seven consecutive days. www.gov.uk/cold-weather-payment
