We have been notified of many of our customers making new claims for Universal Credit (UC), following its introduction to Herefordshire in June this year.
UC is claimed and managed very differently to the heritage benefits (such as Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit) and we’re all getting used to how the new system works.
A UC award is made up of different parts (known as elements). The type of elements that are paid are dependent upon the claimant’s circumstances. Living with other people, being a carer or parent, having a disability or under-occupying your home can all have an effect upon your award.
Many customers have contacted us as they’ve noticed a problem with their award. Unfortunately, we have found that a number of awards have been calculated incorrectly. There has been a particular issue with the housing costs (the amount paid towards the rent) that customers have been receiving. Some customers have been underpaid by hundreds of pounds a month.
We would encourage any customers who are unsure if their UC award is correct or have other queries regarding UC, to contact the Tenancy Sustainment Team on 0300 777 4321.
